Abstract
This article narrates and analyses a process of research on the social construction of virginity and sexual initiation among three different cultural groups in Mexico. Starting from an approach that considers sexuality as an "historical invention". the article describes the object of study by also presenting the political, personal, and theoretical context in which it was designed, as well as the changes it went through with the information dram from fieldwork. After presenting and illustrating three of the categories used to analyze field material (narrative, metaphor, and polyphony, the character of social research is discussed. That is, it reflexively analysis searchers gaze and its effect on the information she produced. Finally, the procedure of codification is explained, along with an example of the method of interpretation.
