Abstract

Two literary works from the xIx century explore the role of marriage as the appropriate means for the integration of women into society; thus, by modeling t h e f e m a l e image according to written and unwritten rule. The 'Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman goes trough emotions, fears and the inability to face reality with a painful awareness of how the self disintegrates. Whereas, The Awakening, a novel by Kate Chopin, presents experience as the mean to break through insensibility and ignorance. In both texts we witness that it is not possible to give up or ignore our own desires; but to struggle passionately, though sometimes hopelessly, for the sake of our identity and recognition not only, as human beings, but also as women.
