Abstract

This paper intends to be a reflection upon Hamlet as a model, as a paradigm, to think in what al1 literary work contributes to psychoanalysis, the essence of desire. However, this paper is not so ambitious in as it makes a considered delimitation of obsessive neurosis. Oedipus signifies incest. Hamlet, the absence of castration. What happens then when instead of the recognition of this there is an emptiness? Something substitutes the absence. The pathetic existence of Hamlet develops in the quest. The oscillation between "to be or not to be". "Desire or no desire". Perhaps this paper comes close to one of the crucial problems of psychoanalysis: to state that you only are after the death of the father. Real death or symbolic death.
