Abstract

This article presents care as a field of theoretical discussion that is under construction and that has been nourished by different approaches and connections coming from feminist thinking. It addresses the female responsibility linked to care as a social, cultural and historical construction that is present in different areas of daily life. Public childcare interventions in Mexico, far from contributing to modify this feminine role, have maintained the centrality of women in reproductive work; a case that illustrates this is the Estancias Infantiles, created in 2007 to provide support to women living in poverty and who did not have social security. Although in 2019, these care services underwent transformations as a result of governmental decisions, these did not imply a change in women’s responsibilities.
