Abstract

Body Theater, as the author proposes, is a practice that originates in the study of different performing artists who recognize the body as a territory of self-knowledge, that is, as the place where performers can apprehend and develop different meanings about themselves, their relationship with others, and their context. This kind of theater allows for the performer’s agency capacity, fades the dividing line between fiction and reality, and uses the imaginary as a liminal creation space in which a new ethos is developed from the bodily practice of the ritual. This conception of theater, cancels the category of character in order to recognize that action, movement, and experience make possible the emergence of new subjectivities. We will call performers not only those who are dedicated to acting, but also those who create and re-create themselves every day and resist the impositions of their context’s factual societal structures through their practice.
