The aim of the next text is to problematize issue of indigenous autonomy through theoretical discussion. To achieve this I will develop a critical analysis of the positions that have theorized about the concept, identifying two theoretical macro dimensions. The first one is an institutional position (from above) that advocates the recognition of autonomy as a right that strengthens the logic of the State; and the second, where autonomy is understood as a construction process (from below) and the emphasis is on strengthening the indigenous political subject. I develop the multiplicity of ways of understanding indigenous autonomy as a polysemic concept and the need to place the analysis in concrete contexts. In conclusion, I advocate an epistemological and political position that places the actors as active entities that recreate and make sense of the idea of autonomy.
