Keywords:

One of the central aspects of the importance of social movements lies in the critical questioning of the prevailing state of affairs and in the proposal of alternative projects. Along with the organizational aspects of these collective actors, cultural interventions play a fundamental role in changing ideas, values, symbols and practices that seek to ensure the construction and sustainment of their transformational projects. Here, we affirm that the case of the Zapatista movement represents a notable example of these efforts. The institutions of indigenous autonomy and the projects constructed based on their resonance in other parts of the world, make possible ties that allow to concretize the democratic principle of the people governing itself. Through the study of the work made in the internal and external facets of the movement, product of the field research of the authors in recent years, we will add empirical evidence that seeks to sustain the presuppositions stated here.
