Concordancias: entre la normalización y la utodeterminación

Abstract

This paper discusses the practices and discourses that make up the sex reassignment process for sex-gender concordance instituted in 2008 in Mexico City, and the effects this clinical and legal intervention within the implicated subjectivities. I have found through participant-observation, interviews with people in sex reassignment and analysis of relevant documents done as part of my doctoral research, that seeking sex-gender concordance is part of a process of normalization and control. A process whose logic is sometimes broken, enabling the subjects to do an exercise of self-transformation and critic that leads/allows them to insert themselves in a different way into the social thread.
