Abstract

Psychosocial rehabilitation is a emerging philosophy of attention for the mentally ill, that has been increasingly defining its fundamentals in since the last decade in the XX century. The paper will describe the current consensus on its principles, the main challenges for its global implementation, some particular examples regarding the practical possibilities of being treated in different countries, and finally some of the main current lines of discussion and development of the discipline, such as the concept of recovery, the emerging awareness of the importance of the Human Rights of patients, the community orientation of services, the problem of transinstitutionalization, the connection between psychosocial rehabilitation and civil society movements, some ideas about the current frontiers of knowledge, the emerging awareness of the importance of social determinants of health and the possibilities of preventive strategies.
