Abstract

This article gives a conceptual development and the analysis of some practices of children’s participation and citizenship in Mexico. It starts giving a broad international framework that introduced children’s participation as an important element in children’s rights. It makes reference to the paradigm-shift regarding the concept of childhood reflected in the UN International Convention of the Rights of the Child. It analyses the relationship between participation and citizenship to end up with a short account of the national consultations of children, which were started up by NGO‘s and UNICEF and then institutionalized within the Federal Institute for Elections in Mexico. Conclusions are drawn in the sense of highlighting the importance to open up more opportunities for children’s participation in order to draw up public policy.
