Abstract

The paper presents a study of the various concepts of image applied in social psychology. The sequence in which concepts are presented follows criteria of logic. The matter of identity in historical and anthropological thought is reviewed; the understanding of collective process in sociological and group theory. Several authors considered to be important due to their contributions to group theory, such as Lewin, Bion and others belonging to Operative Group theory (mainly Pichón and Bauleo) are also reviewed. Contributions derived from institutional thought, especially those concerning matters associated with the institutionalization process, are also considered. Through the study of social movements in their relation to social images, as stated in ethnological and sociological thought, the importance of the castoridian concept of social image is explained
